Size Limits

- Letters, Printed Papers, Small Packets, Literature For The Blind.

Other than roll form Maximum: 900mm in length, width and depth combined; greatest dimension may not exceed 600mm.
Minimum: 90mm x 140mm.
Roll form Maximum: length plus twice the diameter 1.04m, greatest dimension may not exceed 900mm.
Minimum: length plus twice the diameter 170mm, greatest dimension may not be less than 100mm.
Postcards Maximum: 120mm x 235mm.
Minimum: 90mm x 140mm.
Thickness: not less than 0.25mm.
Parcels Maximum: P: length 1.05m, length and girth combined 2m.
XP: length 1.50m, length and girth combined 3m; but for USA (including Puerto Rico): length 1.50m, length and girth combined 2.75m.
Minimum: as for letters.

Air Mail Label

All air mail items must bear the superscription "BY AIR MAIL". Blue airmail labels are available for this purpose free of charge at all post offices. The label should be affixed to the top left hand corner of the address side of the envelopes or close to the address on parcels and packets (close to each address if it is shown in more than one place on the item). Alternatively the words "BY AIR MAIL" may be written boldly on air mail items. In the case of parcels an air mail label must also be affixed to the Despatch Note if one is used.

Customs Declaration

All goods sent abroad by post, whether in letter packets, small packets or parcels, must be declared to Customs on special forms available at post offices.

Typhoon / Rainstorm Arrangements

Post Offices will be closed when typhoon signal number 8 or above is hoisted or when rainstorm black warning is issued before the commencement of normal business hours.

Method of Addressing

For Hong Kong, the address should always include :-

1. Name of addressee,
2. Flat and Floor numbers,
3. Name of building,
4. Number of building and name of street,
5. Name of village, town or district (in CAPITAL LETTERS),
6. Hong Kong, Kowloon or New Territories as appropriate (in CAPITAL LETTERS).

For Hong Kong
(Postcode system is not in place in Hong Kong)

 

For Overseas, the address should always include :-

1. Name of addressee,
2. Flat and Floor numbers,
3. Name of building,
4. Number of house or building, name of street,
5. Name of village or town (in CAPITAL LETTERS),
6. The postal district number or postal code, if any,
7. Name of country, state or province (in CAPITAL LETTERS),
8. Name of country (in CAPITAL LETTERS).

Articles that should 'Never Be Posted'

What articles are prohibited?

DANGEROUS ARTICLES

  • Explosives
    Fireworks, Dynamite, nitroglycerin, toy gun caps, detonator, arms and ammunition of any kind, airbags, components for cars

  • Compressed gases and aerosols
    Lighters containing gas, gas cylinders (including camping gas cylinders), aerosols of all kinds, butane cylinders, fire extinguishers

  • Flammable liquids
    Alcohol, gasoline, thinners, lighter fuel, paints, varnishes, enamels and kindred substances which have a flashpoint (closed cup test) below 37.8°C. Those with a flashpoint of 37.8°C and over are however admitted exceptionally subject to compliance with the special packing conditions given in the Post Office Guide

  • Flammable solids
    Matches of all kinds, celluloid film, aluminium alkyls, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium and substances which becomes dangerous when wet

  • Oxidizing materials and organic peroxides
    Substances which yield oxygen readily, bleaching powders, organic peroxides such as hair or textile dyes, adhesives, bleach, components of fiberglass repair kits

  • Poisons (toxic) and infectious substances
    Pesticides, arsenic, cyanide, weed-killers, vaccines, drugs and medicines (except samples of poisons, toxics, drugs and medicines in prescription quantities when packed and transmitted in the prescribed manner), live virus materials, bacterial agents, used intravenous needles

  • Radioactive materials

    • Radioactive materials, whether solid, liquid or gaseous, manufactured items such as luminous dials, luminous compounds, ores and residues, which have any significant alpha, beta, gamma or neutron radiation. Exceptionally, small quantities of such materials are admitted by registered letter post if suitably packed and sent airmail, and provided that when made up for the post the radiation measured at the outside surface of a package does not exceed 10 millirontgen per 24 hours
    • Medical or research samples which contain radioactive sources

  • Corrosives
    Acids, alkalis, wet cell type car batteries, caustic soda, hydrochloric acid, corrosive cleaning liquid, corrosive rust remover or preventive, instruments containing mercury and battery fluid, paint strippers

  • Other dangerous goods

    • Material which has anesthetic, noxious, toxic or other characteristics which can cause extreme annoyance or discomfort in the event of leakage, dry ice, loose asbestos fibres, irritants such as concentrated garlic essence, strongly magnetized materials, toys containing batteries
    • All dangerous goods including perfumery products and lithium batteries are prohibited to be sent to overseas destinations by air mail
    • Sharp instruments which are not properly protected

OBJECTIONABLE ARTICLES

Indecent or obscene communications, prints, photographs, books or other articles; packets bearing grossly offensive, indecent or obscene words, marks or designs
