Stamp Issuing Programme for 2002

The Acting Postmaster General, Mr. Allan CHIANG announced today (6 September 2001) the stamp issuing programme for 2002. There will be a new set of definitive stamps , seven special stamp issues and four stamp sheetlets .

The release dates and brief descriptions of the stamp issues are:

2002 Hong Kong Definitive Stamps -- 14 October 2002 (Monday)

This is the second set of definitive stamps issued by Hongkong Post since the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China on 1 July 1997. It comprises 16 denominations and the design concept focuses on the harmony of contrast, between the east and the west cultures which co-exist in Hong Kong. Accommodating is the merit of Chinese culture while receptive to technologies from the west has always been what makes Hong Kong unique. Last day cover for definitive stamps issued in 1999, first day cover , two presentation packs , two souvenir sheets and a prestige definitive stamp booklet will be issued.

Special Stamp Issues

Year of the Horse -- 13 January 2002 (Sunday)

This is the third set of stamps of the third Lunar New Year animals' series . The art of Chinese paper cutting is used to emphasize the beautiful appearance and movement of the horse. A set of four stamps, postage prepaid picture cards , a souvenir sheet and an imperforated stamp sheetlet with a $5 stamp will be issued.

Hong Kong Art Collections -- 24 February 2002 (Sunday)

A set of four stamps depicts the distinguished art works produced by local artists. The art works which are currently kept in the Hong Kong Museum of Art feature calligraphy, oil painting, sculpture as well as ink and colour painting. This set of stamps will be issued during the time the Hong Kong Arts Festival is held. A mini-pane and a set of four postage prepaid picture cards will also be issued.

Cyber Industry in Hong Kong - 14 April 2002 (Sunday)

A set of stamps depicts the impacts of the fast growing and immense development of information technology on different aspects, namely: education, communication, entertainment and business in Hong Kong. A set of four stamps, a mini-pane and a prestige stamp booklet will be issued.

Hong Kong, China - Canada Joint Issue on Corals - 1 May 2002 (Wednesday / Public Holiday)

This is the third set of stamps issue Hongkong Post jointly issued with an overseas postal administration. There are two stamps depicting the colourful and attractive corals available in Hong Kong and another two stamps featuring those in Canada. A souvenir pack with souvenir sheets issued by the two postal administrations will also be released.

Beijing - Kowloon Through Trains - 7 July 2002 (Sunday)

Since the handing over, the flow of visitors between Hong Kong and the Mainland become busier and through trains are the most popular public transportation means chosen by local commuters. Hence, the Beijing - Hong Kong through train symbolises the intimate relations and interactions of the people between Hong Kong and the Mainland. A set of four stamps depicts the routing and famous attractions along the route of the Beijing - Kowloon Through Trains. These tourist attractions are: Temple of Heaven (Beijing) , Shaolin Monastery (Henan) , Changjiang River Bridge (Nanjiang) and Modern Buildings (Hong Kong) . A mini-pane will also be issued.

Rocks of Hong Kong - 15 September 2002 (Sunday)

High rise buildings and prosperous economic activities are characteristics of Hong Kong, a top class cosmopolitan city. In fact, Hong Kong also has many scenic attractions on the Outlying Islands such as rocks of different characteristics. This set of four special stamps features different rock types and unique landscape on Ping Chau , Port Island , Po Pin Chau and Lamma Island . A souvenir sheet and a set of postage prepaid picture cards will also be issued.

Christmas Stamps - 24 November 2002 (Sunday)

This is the second set of Christmas stamps issued in Hong Kong and four stamps will be issued. Apart from the conventional festival red and green, an innovative feature is the specially designed perforations inside each stamp that form the images of Christmas tree, festival bell, ornaments and snowman. This is the first set of special stamps with designs made up of different perforations . A mini-pane and a set of postage prepaid picture cards will also be issued.

Special Products

Definitive Stamp Sheetlet (No. 6) to Mark the Serving the Community Festival - 19 January 2002 (Saturday)

This stamp sheetlet is issued to commemorate the Serving the Community Festival to be held in January 2002. This is the second stamp sheetlet to illustrate the daily activities of government departments in serving the community. The first sheetlet was issued on 4 December 1996.

Gold and Silver Stamp Sheetlet on Lunar New Year Animals -- Snake and Horse - 9 February 2002 (Saturday)

A prestige 22-karat gold, 24-karat gold and 99.9% silver Miniature Sheet will be issued to celebrate the outgoing of the Year of the Snake and the upcoming of the Year of the Horse. The Miniature Sheet will have two stamps depicting snake and horse separately to denote good fortunate and happiness accompanying the approach of the Year of the Horse.

Definitive Stamp Sheetlet (No. 7) to Commemorate Hongkong Post's Participation in PhilaKorea 2002 World Stamp Exhibition - 27 July 2002 (Saturday)

This stamp sheetlet is issued to commemorate Hongkong Post's participation in Seoul Stamp Exhibition to be held at Seoul from 2 to 11 August 2002. PHILAKOREA '02 is a General World Stamp Exhibition that has been an officially granted patronage by the Federation Internationale de Philatelic (FIP) .

Definitive Stamp Sheetlet (No. 8) to Commemorate Hongkong Post's Participation in Amphilex 2002 International Stamp Fair and Exhibition in Netherlands - 24 August 2002 (Saturday)

This stamp sheetlet is issued to commemorate Hongkong Post's participation in Holland Stamp Exhibition to be held at Amsterdam from 30 August to 3 September 2002.

Greeting Cards - 22 June 2002 (Saturday)

A set of six postage prepaid greeting cards will be issued. Each card carries unique scenery of Hong Kong for senders conveying best wishes and warm greetings to overseas friends and relatives on different occasions.

The above release dates are tentative and subject to change. Details of each stamp issue will be announced closer to the date of issue.
