At today's (October 6) awards presentation ceremony of the "Everlasting Friendship" Letter Writing Competition in support of the Universal Postal Union's (UPU) 30th International Letter Writing Competition for Young People 2001, Hongkong Post announced the launch of a "Free Post Day" for local students on October 9, 2001.
The launching of a "Free Post Day" is one of Hongkong Post's 160th anniversary celebrating activities, and is also in support of the World Post Day 2001 of the UPU. Its aim is to encourage youngsters to communicate by mail and promote the important role of postal services in the worldwide communication network.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr P C Luk, Postmaster General said: "we are overwhelmed by both the quality and quantity of the entries. A total of 2,000 entries from 440 schools have been received. With this encouraging response to the competition, we are pleased to launch the "Free Post Day" on October 9 for both the primary and secondary school students in Hong Kong."

"More than 370 schools have already participated by the deadline for enrollment. We have also forwarded over 100,000 specially designed lettergrams 'The Post - Broaden your Horizons' to the participating schools in early September for students to post them to both local and overseas addressees free of charge on 9 October 2001," added Mr Luk.

The top winners of the English and Chinese groups of the Letter Writing Competition were awarded to Leonie Xin Chao of Diocesan Girls' Junior School and Lee Ling Hunt of LaSalle Junior School respectively. Top prizes were presented to the three winners of each contest group and ten prizes of merit to other finalists of each group. Winners were awarded prizes worth over a total of HK$30,000. The Champion of the English group has represented Hong Kong to take part in the UPU's 30th International Letter Writing Competition.

"I thank Hongkong Post for giving me such a great opportunity to be part of this Letter Writing Competition. It does not only encourage letter writing among students, help improve writing skill but also bridge the gap between humans and develop long-lasting friendship," said Ms Miriam Yeung, the famous pop-singer who was the guest of honor at the ceremony and presented awards to the winners.

The topic chosen was entitled " I am writing this letter about our friendship and the differences between us." The competition, divided into two groups - Chinese and English, were open to students at age 15 or below.

Panel of judges for this competition for both the Chinese and English groups included the Postmaster General; local university lecturers; accomplished writers and representatives of Hong Kong Institute of Education, school principals, representatives of Commercial Press (HK) Ltd., and the Education Department.
