Hongkong Post to Issue First Free e-Cert to Smart ID Cardholders

Hongkong Post today (20 June 2003) announces that it stands ready to issue the free e-Cert to the coming new smart ID card holders. Starting from 23 June 2003, Hong Kong residents who have obtained their smart ID card can apply in person at 20 designated post offices for the one-year-free e-Cert to be embedded into their smart ID card instantly.

To enable residents to easily and conveniently enjoy the use of the e-Cert on smart ID cards, a wide range of smart card readers are now available for sale at 20 designated post offices. The readers can also be purchased through mail order service available at all post offices or internet at http://www.hongkongpost.gov.hk. With appropriate smart card readers, smart ID card e-cert holders can experience the convenience of performing secure online services and transactions anytime.

Mr. Kingsley LI, Acting Postmaster General of Hongkong Post, said, "Today we witness another milestone reaffirming Hong Kong's status as a leading digital city. With the widespread use of the e-Cert embedded in the smart ID card, Hong Kong people can experience new secure e-life. They can now feel more secure and confident when undertaking online activities such as e-banking, online stock trading, online payments, online shopping, online auctions, e-government services and many online entertainment services, etc."
