17 young talents received awards at an award presentation held today (30 January 2004) at the exhibition venue of the HONG KONG 2004 Stamp Expo. The awards were presented by Mrs. Joanna CHOI, Deputy Postmaster General, Mr. Kingsley Li, Assistant Postmaster General (Business Development) and Mr. Chris WARDLAW, Deputy Secretary for Education and Manpower. 30 merit awards were also given out at the ceremony.
The young people were recognised for the outstanding quality of their stamp exhibits produced for the "5th Inter-School Stamp Exhibits Competition". The Competition was organised by Hongkong Post, with the Education and Manpower Bureau as co-organiser. The Competition is aimed at promoting philately among students and offering young collectors the opportunity of producing exhibits for participation in international philatelic competitions.
The response to the Competition was very encouraging. With support from parents and schools, 182 frames of stamp exhibits were received and 320 students participated. The Champion of Class A (student aged below 12) was a group with 2 students including WONG Hin-long and WONG Hoi-long from Oblate Fathers Primary School (A.M.); Champion of Class B (student aged between 12 and below 16) was the group comprising LAM Kai-sze, KI Ching-lam and POK Shing-yau from Toi Shan Association College; and Champion of Class C (student aged 16 and above) was CHUNG Chi-hang from the Hong Kong Community College, an affiliate of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
Each winner received a cash coupon in addition to a specially designed trophy and a set of serviced first day covers issued in 2003. They also won for their schools splendidly designed grand trophies and book coupons.
All winning exhibits and submitted entries will be displayed at the HONG KONG 2004 Stamp Expo held at Hall 1, Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, 1 Expo Drive, Wanchai, Hong Kong from 30 January to 3 February 2004.
