Children Stamps Design Competition - "Dress Bear Up"

The Postmaster General, Mr. Allan CHIANG, announced today that Hongkong Post will organise another territory-wide children stamps design competition. Previous similar competitions have drawn great interest from children who have been delighted to get involved in the design of stamps that can ultimately be used for postage. This time the theme is "Dress Bear Up". Participants can demonstrate their creativity by dressing up the template bear in different ways, by drawing or colouring, by sticking on die-cut apparel and accessories in paper or cloth, or even by accessorising the bear in a knitted jacket of their choice.

The objective of the competition is to promote children's interest in stamp collecting by involving them in the development process of stamps. All children who are residents of Hong Kong aged between 6 and 12 by 31 December 2004 are eligible to take part. Entries will be accepted during the period from 19 November to 11 December 2004.

Mr. Allan CHIANG states: "Stamp collecting is a hobby with universal appeal. It is without doubt something which can bring great pleasure to young people from an early age and continue to provide fulfillment as they go through life. We anticipate a good response to this initiative, which will involve youngsters in all aspects of the creation of these stamps from initial design to final production and their important role in providing for the delivery of postal items. Stamps may be small in size but, just like children, they have great significance in our society. These 'Dress Bear Up' stamps will become true ambassadors for Hong Kong, as will the children who have designed them."

Four champions will be identified from the finalists and each of them will be rewarded with a book coupon worth HK$2,000 and a trophy. The four winning designs will be featured in a special "Children Stamps" issue to be released in 2006. Twenty other children with outstanding designs will each be awarded merit prizes, including a book coupon worth HK$100 and a Certificate of Merit. All participants will receive a serviced First Day Cover of "Children Stamps - Andersen's Fairy Tales" as a token of appreciation. In addition, the three schools with the most entries will be honoured with the Best Participated School Award as recognition for schools which encourage their students to participate and learn about the very positive pastime of stamp collecting.

Entry forms will be sent to all primary schools in Hong Kong and will be available at all post offices starting from 19 November 2004. Photocopied forms will also be accepted. Forms may also be downloaded from the Hongkong Post Stamps website at www.hongkongpoststamps.com. For enquiries, please call the Hongkong Post Philatelic Bureau Hotline 2785 5711.
