Hongkong Post today launched the "2005 International Letter-Writing Competition for Young People (Hong Kong Contest)" Award Presentation Ceremony at the General Post Office.
The Competition was organized in support of the Universal Postal Union's International Letter-Writing Competition for Young People in 2005 with the objective of promoting youngsters' interest in letter-writing as a means of expressing love and care for others. "A Letter to My Favourite Fairytale Character" was chosen as the theme for this year's competition, in tribute to Hans Christian Andersen and in celebration of the bicentenary of his birth this year.
"We hope the competition can arouse youngsters' awareness that letter-writing is a powerful and meaningful way to communicate with someone important to you. Really, nothing gets through like a letter," says The Postmaster General, Mr. Allan CHIANG. "We are excited with the encouraging response from schools and students this year. Over five hundred schools participated in the competition, which represents nearly half of all the primary schools and secondary schools in Hong Kong. The total number of letter entries was close to ten thousand, breaking the historical records."
The Assistant Postmaster General (Business Development), Mr. Dan CHOI, presented awards to the 20 merit winners. The ambassador, Mr. Alex FONG presented awards to the three grand prize winners of the Chinese group. The officiating guest, Mr. Stephen CHAN, SCOLAR Member and Chairperson of Curriculum Development Council's Committee on English Language Education, presented awards to the three grand prize winners of the English group. The Deputy Postmaster General, Mrs. Joanna CHOI, presented trophies to the grand champion and the three Best Participated School Awards.
The grand champion would represent Hong Kong, China, at the Universal Postal Union's International Letter-Writing Competition to compete against the best young writers from other participating countries for a free trip to Copenhagen, Andersen's home town.
